ART & JAZZ on the Maribyrnong is our last Skin Cancer Awareness event for the 2008/2009 summer. The foundation is dedicated to promoting awareness of this insidious disease that takes our loved ones and “Our Future”. Over 1600 people die from Skin Cancer each year in Australia, nearly 1,300 from melanoma alone.
The foundation is sponsoring this special awareness event to inform and educate as many people as possible of the dangers from over exposure to the sun and the importance of early detection that could save your life. The Founder Louise White is desperate to pass on what she has learnt after losing her daughter Emily, who lost her battle with Melanoma shortly after her 27th birthday in mid 2006.
“We need to get the message out there” - Melanoma is the second biggest killer of young people in their 20’s, second only to car accidents. We also need to be vigilant in protecting our skin and being aware of changing and suspicious moles, with regular examination by a dermatologist. Also throughout the winter months it’s important to self examine as our bodies are covered up and changes are not easily noticed. Six months can mean life or death when it comes to a melanoma.
ART & JAZZ on the Maribyrnong will be a FREE Family day with focus on Skin Cancer Awareness and will include an exhibition of up and coming artists, including Pete Mitchell Jazz Quartet, the Jelly Tub Rollers and singer Lauren Gillard. In addition, a group of roving actors and performers will also entertain. There will be an opportunity to try out a range of heritage games, also discovering the gardens including the Melbourne Living Museum of the west. With food and wine available, also coffee, tea and scones including healthy free apples.
The foundation has received support from the Maribyrnong Council including Parks Victoria we hope this awareness day will be a huge success. The venue is a hidden jewel of the west and has an amazing history dating back to the mid 1800’s
melaNOmore awareness - Over the course of the day the foundation will pass on information about Skin Cancer including a range of leaflets which will give instructions on how to self examine and what different moles look like, including free sunscreen and foundation merchandise.
SPEAKERS - will include Professor of Dermatology and melanoma survivors sharing their experience.
